The name Wilro stems from the early history of what is today Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and its commercial and financial capital. In the 1880’s the Witwatersrand (ridge of white waters) became well known around the world to gold prospectors, adventurers and entrepreneurs. Along the western Witwatersrand, the brothers Fred and Harry Struben were early prospectors on two farms in the area, WILgespruit (Willow Creek) and ROodekrans (Red Cliff). It was here that the brothers discovered a gold-bearing reef that they named Confidence, before the discovery of the main reef in 1886. It was the discovery of gold that led to the establishment of Johannesburg and why it is still colloquially referred to as Egoli, ie: city of gold.
The company was founded in 1995, by Eugene Armer and two partners, with Eugene taking over as sole owner in 1999. From the outset, operations have focused on private day tours and point-to-point transfers, creating employment opportunities for registered tourist guides who are passionate about sharing with our guests the story of South Africa, in particular, Johannesburg and Gauteng province.
Today, we are based in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg and operate a fleet of twelve vehicles up to 7 seats in size. We are bonded members of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association) and compliant with all legislative requirements, in terms of operating licenses and comprehensive insurance.
